The Committee for Early Career Athletic Trainers will also be referred to as CECAT. This committee has been created to include both students and early career professionals (< 7 years experience). This committee will focus on engaging and retaining early career professionals.

Mission Statement: To provide athletic training students and recent graduates opportunities in networking, career progression, engagement, and promote development socially and professionally within the field of athletic training.

Vision Statement: To promote growth, mentorship, engagement, retention, and diversity amongst early professional athletic trainers in the state of Michigan.

MATS Mentorship Program: Mentorship is a primary role and vision within this committee. We are seeking individuals who are dedicated to the athletic training profession, who work in any setting (traditional or non-traditional), and who are willing to support the growth and development of current graduate athletic training students and early career professionals.

Our mentors seek to provide high-level encouragement and guidance with a variety of knowledge and experience to provide athletic training students and early career professionals the skills needed to advance in the profession. This will not be an instruction of day-to-day, routine work, but instead an opportunity for career improvement and development in the field of athletic training.

Each mentor will be involved in a mentorship role with no more than three mentee’s during their year of mentorship service.

Examples of topics discussed between mentors and mentees:

  • Writing EAPs

  • Establishing Vendors

  • Negotiating Contracts

  • Interprofessional Relationships (team doctors, medical directors, athletic directors)

  • General guidance and advice

  • Additional topics will be provided monthly from CECAT

Requirements for involvement within the mentorship program include:

  1. Being a current MATS member (professional or student).

  2. Quarterly meetings with your mentee with at least one encouraged in person, if possible - we suggest the in person meeting be at the MATS annual symposium.

  3. Remain a mentor/mentee for one year with the option to renew your role once your year in the mentorship program is complete.
